It is an unfortunate fact of life that piracy does affect some parts of the world, especially around Somalia. However in Asia, in over 15 years of sailing around the region we have never personally experienced (nor have any of the vessel that we represent) any form of piracy at sea or in the islands. The islands and bays that are described here in our website are as safe as any in the world.
The piracy in Asia is highly targeted at commercial trading vessels in the Straits of Malacca, one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world with over 70,000 ships passing through in 2008.
HOWEVER it is worth noting that in the first quarter of 2009, ONLY ONE piracy case occurred in the Straits of Malacca versus in the rest of the world 102. In whole of 2008 there were only 2 incidents in the Straits of Malacca in that entire year.
As this recent TIME Magazine article shows piracy has been successfully tackled in recent times.
With only 3 incidents in 2 years for a total of well over 100,000 ships that pass through the Straits of Malacca, it could be said that one would have a much greater chance of being hit by a bullet fired in Europe or the USA than ever being the victim of piracy in the Straits of Malacca.
In a sense yachting in Asia is safer than walking the streets of London or New York.
Will this fact stop people from going on holiday to London or New York?
